Finding a ray of hope

A few years back, when Sukhi lost her husband to alcoholism, her in-laws broke all ties with her. Dejected, she was forced to return to her mother, who herself was combating age-related ailments. Sukhi’s earnings as a daily wage worker were not enough to take care of her mother and her three children.

While Sukhi was struggling to make ends meet, someone in the neighbourhood told her about the Asha Mahila Milk Producer Company.

“I can’t even imagine how I would have even managed if I had not associated with Asha MPC. Things were going so bad that it was getting difficult to even arrange for our daily bread, let alone my mother’s medicines. We also had one buffalo, but that was not sufficient,” says an emotional Sukhi.

“I had never heard about an MPC before. I was not confident about my decision, but thought of giving it a chance,” adds Sukhi who became the member of AMMPC in October 2017.

In a little over two years, Sukhi has sold over 1600 litre of milk, thereby earning over INR 70,000 annually. She has cleared all her debts and dues.

“I am particularly impressed by the transparency of the MPC. Before Asha, I had never seen a bank in my life and today I visit it regularly. I can now comfortably take care of my children and afford my mother’s medical expenses too. Now I just want to continue with this business and work hard for my kids’ education” she says.

With Sukhi’s efforts, 8 more women have joined AMMPC.

Sukhi Devi’s story is a perfect example to explain the tagline for Asha Mahila Milk Producer Company (AMMPC). The line, “Asha – Mahilaonki” depicts empowerment and provides a ray of hope for women.
